And she may have gotten into hot water in the past when, to some observers, she got too political. But her final point in the conversation with Harlow can serve as a reminder to all of us that no matter how much your views differ or how vehemently you disagree with your co-workers- no matter how important the issues and how high the stakes- you can leise be friendly and maintain a harmonious work environment. I love the work I do. I think I have the best job in the world for a lawyer. I respect all my colleagues and genuinely like most of them, Ginsburg said, speaking about her work at the end of a response about the things she has loved most in her life, a list that included her luck, her dear spouse, her family and children, and beautiful music. She paused just enough before most of them to elicit a big laugh from the audience. But even the hint that she wouldnt necessarily choose every fellow jus tice to be her best friend didnt deter her from pressing on with an important pearl of wisdom any employee could learn from.Ive never worked in a more collegial place than the Supreme Court. Let me give you two examples. We have a tradition started by Chief Justice Melville Fuller at the end of the 19th century, and its the handshake before we sit to hear oral arguments and before we confer. We go around our conference room, each justice shaking hands with every other. Its as if to say, Maybe I was miffed yesterday when you circulated that nasty dissent, but we are in this together. Ginsburg went on to explain that the justices also lunch together every day they sit to hear arguments and every day they confer, that the chief justice usually brings in wine for a toast when its a justices birthday, how its the former junior justices job to make a dinner in honor of a new justice coming on board, and how the group frequently travels together both domestically and abroad. So theres a lo t of togetherness, she said. Think about it These are the nine members of the highest court in the country. They deliberate over and make decisions in some of the most important cases, sometimes altering the course of history (think of their 2015 vote making same-sex marriage a right nationwide). And they have staggeringly different views on how the Constitution should be interpreted and, in some instances, which way the court should rule. Yet they still manage to cultivate a respectful and amicable environment- friendly, even if everyone isnt friends with everyone else. But even friendship is possible, as Ginsburgs close one with the late and quite conservative Justice Antonin Scalia demonstrates. In the compilation of Ginsburgs writings My Own Words, her biographers Mary Hartnett and Wendy W. Williams quote a 2007 interview in which she speaks fondly of Scalia. We are two people who are quite different in their core beliefs, but who respect each others character and ability, Ginsb urg said. Even the most self-confident people have moments when the voice of doubt starts its nasty work. Questioning. Doubting. How talented and brilliant your work is.Dont fall for it.If you want to achieve your dreams, you have to put unreliable self-talk in its place. Heres howFact checkSure, you might be convinced that the manuscript you spent two years slaving over will be a publishing sensation. But before you start popping cham pagne corks in premature celebration, ship your tome off to a few editors.Do some fact checking, to see if your work truly measures up. Compare it to the work of others. Also, if impartial editors shred your baby, dont despair. Better to find out early and learn from the experience. Better to keep growing than listen to that lying voice in your head.The same approach holds for negative self-talk. If you got passed over for a promotion, dont assume its because you suck. Its possible a more qualified candidate was selected. Try to find out what the winning candidate possesses that you dont. Status quo is much easier than upsets, changing course and having to learn new things.Learning to accept change rather than fighting it will help calm that internal dialogue.Toward the end of my law enforcement career, I knew I was ready for a change. I yearned to throw myself into my creative life, but fear made me hesitant about retiring early. The voice in my head said to hold off, but my heart said otherwise. So I accepted that change was inevitable and I retired early. It was the right move for me.Manage your attentionDont be held hostage by your internal conversations, b ecause theyre frequently fueled by insecurity, fear, jealousy, conceit or false bravado. Also, they can distract from paying attention to more important things.Get your attention off your internal conversations by educating yourself. Seek the council of wise people whom you respect. Tell them your story. Your circumstances. Before the meeting, create a list of specific questions that will bring to the light if a role or company is right for you. Lactation Accommodation Goals Lactation accommodation goals are to Ease the transition of mothers who return to work following the birth of a child.Enable mothers to breastfeed past the time off a llotted by company PTO policies and the Family and Medical Leave Act.Assist mothers to attend work rather than having to take time away from work to express milk.Help control healthcare costs by providing the opportunity to develop a healthier infant.Ensure that women who are pregnant or considering pregnancy know that breastfeeding will be accommodated by their employer. Provide a motivating, employee-supportive work environment for all employees.Assist employees to experience work-life balance. Lactation Accommodation Policy All women who breastfeed their child, and who need to express milk during the working day, will work with their supervisor and Human Resources to determine how best to accommodate the needs of the mother while still accomplishing the performance of her job. Time for Lactation Accommodation Supervisors may consider flexible working arrangements. Women may use their break and lunchtime to express milk. PTO hours can also be used to express milk if needed. Br eaks to express milk should not last longer than 30 minutes. If an employee needs to take more than two breaks during the workday to express milk, the employee will need to use personal time (lunch, PTO, and so on.)The Environment for Lactation Accommodation Human Resources will work with each nursing mother to determine a private area in which they may express milk. Milk should be placed in cooler-type containers and may be stored in company refrigerators.
